George Albert Karikas is an emeritus professor of the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the University of West Attica (UniWA). He studied Pharmacy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). In 1981 he prepared his doctoral thesis in the laboratories of Biological Chemistry and Therapeutic Clinic of the School of Medicine of the NKUA, with the title “Effect of cannabis smoke and its components on the ATPase of the brain”, while in 1986, thanks to a State Scholarship, he completed a second doctorate (Ph.D.) at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Manchester University, in the United Kingdom, where he taught two years, as a tutor. In the last 40 years, he worked as a researcher-visiting professor at the Schools of Pharmacy of the Universidad de Panama, Universidad de Salamanca, Frederick University and NKUA (Department of Nursing). He was elected a regular professor of Biochemistry-Clinical Biochemistry, at UniWA (2007-2017).

He was President of the Department of Medical Laboratories (DML), founder and Director of the first postgraduate program at DML. From 1988-2007 he worked as a quality control officer in the Pharmaceutical/Cosmetics Industry, and with the rank of Director of the NHS worked  in the Parenteral Nutrition and Pharmacokinetics Unit of the Children’s Hospital ‘Agia Sophia’ and as Director of the Pharmaceutical Department at the General Hospital  of Piraeus “Tzaneio”. He has published more than 100 original research papers and reviews in peer-reviewed international journals (>2000 references, h-index: 25, i10-index: 45) and participated with >150 announcements/speeches/posters, in international and national conferences. His research interests are focused on Clinical Biochemistry, Pharmacognosy and Chemistry of Natural Products. He has authored 10 books and university notes and supervised 70 graduate and postgraduate theses. He is a reviewer of 30 foreign scientific journals, editor-in-chief of the scientific journal “Pharmakeftiki”, Guest Editor in the journal Molecules and member of Editorial Boards of international journals and many scientific societies. Until now, he is the coordinator/professor of the Molecular Pharmacology-Pharmacokinetics section of the above Master program titled “Biomedical methods and technology in diagnosis”. Member of the main research group of the Laboratory of Chemistry-Biochemistry-Cosmetology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He has received several awards and distinctions. He speaks fluently English and Spanish.
