Associate Professor, Dept. of Biology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)

Dr Antonelou received PhD on cell biology from the School of Sciences, Dept. of Biology, NKUA, Greece. As an Associate Professor she teaches Cell Βiology, Developmental Biology and related courses in the undergraduate programs of the NKUA (Dept. of Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and in three post-graduate programs of the NKUA (Dept. of Biology, Medical School, School of Primary Education) and of the UniWA. As head of the red blood cell (RBC) research unit (https://www.antonelou.com/) she focuses on the biology of this cell type, which has been extensively used as a model biological system for studying cellular structures (e.g. membrane) and processes (e.g. aging), and is currently appreciated as a cellular biomarker of local and systemic stress. She is interested in elucidating the mechanistic basis of RBC storage lesion and blood transfusion effects, pathophysiological aspects of diseases presented with anemia, the physiology biomarkers of stress and diseases, by means of biochemical methods, omics, electron microscopy and nanotechnological approaches. She serves as Academic Editor in two scientific journals, as Regular Reviewer in >50 journals, and as Evaluator in several national and international Grant and Fellowships Programs, in the fields of cell biology, transfusion therapy and hematology, and she is actively involved in the translation/scientific editing of academic books. Dr Antonelou is a member of the Hellenic Societies of Biological Sciences and Blood Transfusion, as well as of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). She has received a PhD fellowship from the General Secretariat of Research and Technology of Greece, and special distinctions and awards from the ISBT and from the Hellenic Society of Hematology, including the Arkagathos Goutas Award. Dr Antonelou has been repeatedly invited as a plenary speaker in congresses organized by the Hellenic Society of Hematology, the Hellenic, British and Korean Societies of Blood Transfusion, the Cyprus Thalassemia Association etc. She has supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate diploma theses and research programs (Μ.Sc, PhD, post-Doc). Dr Antonelou participated as a trainer in the European COST Action BM1202, and as a scientific director, academic consultant, and senior researcher in >20 projects. She has more than 150 announcements in national and international conferences and 69 articles published in international peer-reviewed journals (>3,200 citations, h-index 28).
