Tzounakas Vassilis

Dr. Tzounakas is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biochemistry of the School of Medicine of the University of Patras (UP). He teaches the courses Biochemistry I, Biochemistry II, and Biochemistry III at the School of Medicine of the UP and gives lectures in several MSc programs of the UP, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and the University of West Attica. His research interests focus on the study of blood metabolism and redox biology -with an emphasis on erythrocytes- in pathophysiological conditions, as well as blood transfusion biology and the discovery of blood biomarkers (erythrocytic or extracellular).

Dr. Tzounakas is the Principal Investigator of a “MEDICUS” program funded by the UP and the supervisor of a postdoctoral grant funded by the European Hematology Association. As a postdoctoral researcher, he was the Principal Investigator of an HFRI grant and a fellow of IKY. He has published several scientific papers and participated in numerous national and international congresses, in which some of his works were awarded. He contributes as a peer-reviewer in many scientific journals, as well as a guest editor, and he has been invited as a speaker to national congresses of hematology and transfusion.
